Straighten Up! How Better Posture Can Reduce Pain & Boost Mobility
A crick in your neck. Persistent lower back pain. Discomfort every time you raise your arm. What do these three symptoms have in common? You might be surprised to learn it has to do with posture!
Many people are surprised by how many of their daily aches and pains can be attributed to poor postural habits. In a way, we get it: unlike sudden injuries, posture-related pain often develops gradually, so you don’t think much about your posture until it becomes a problem.
However, the multidisciplinary team at Ace Physique wants to help you take control of your health and well-being, including improving your posture. In fact, a few minor adjustments to your daily routine can make a real difference in how you feel and move.
What Is Good Posture (And Why Does It Matter)?
Most people think “good posture” means standing up straight. However, it’s a little more complicated than that.
In reality, good posture is a sign that your body is in optimal alignment. Your bones, muscles, and joints are balanced in a way that puts the least amount of strain on your tissues. Think ears aligned over shoulders, shoulders over hips, and hips over knees and ankles.
When your posture is balanced:
- Muscles work efficiently, which reduces fatigue
- Joints experience less wear and tear
- Pain is reduced or avoided altogether
- Movement becomes more fluid
But there’s another important factor in good posture: movement. Your posture shifts every time you sit, lift, reach, or walk. Maintaining healthy spinal alignment throughout daily activities is key, especially for people working at desks, driving long hours, or engaging in repetitive movements.
The truth is that staying in one position too long—even a “perfect” one—can cause stiffness and strain. Changing positions frequently, taking breaks, and gently stretching throughout the day help keep tissues healthy and engaged.

The Link Between Poor Posture and Pain
Here are three of the most common poor postural habits we see at our clinic–and how they can lead to pain and discomfort:
Forward Head Posture
- This posture is common among those who spend a lot of time on their mobile devices. Forcing the head forward adds stress on the cervical vertebrae and supporting muscles.
Prolonged Sitting
- Working at a desk or otherwise spending a lot of time sitting can compress the spinal discs and tighten your hip flexors, leading to lower back pain.
Poor Biomechanics
- Problems in joint alignment can cause improper movement patterns, which can lead to compensations, muscular imbalances, and persistent discomfort.

Improving Your Posture with the Team at Ace Physique
The good news? You don’t have to go about improving your posture on your own. Our multidisciplinary team is here to assess, treat, and support your body from multiple angles. Here’s what we offer:

How Screen Time Affects Your Spine
Spending too much time doomscrolling? Not only does it affect your mood, but it can also be a headache–literally!
Spending too much time hunched over your phone, tablet, or laptop can strain the muscles in your neck and upper back, potentially leading to a forward head posture sometimes called “tech neck.” Unfortunately, tech neck can lead to tension headaches, neck stiffness, shoulder discomfort, and other uncomfortable symptoms.
Why Does This Happen?
When your head tilts forward even a little, the weight on your neck more than doubles, restricting the muscles at the base of the skull and across your shoulders. This muscle tightness can irritate nerves, limit blood flow, and trigger tension headaches.
How Do I Know If I Have Tech Neck?
Look for these symptoms:
- Dull, aching pain at the base of the neck
- Headaches that start in the back of the head and wrap forward
- Stiffness after sitting at a screen for long periods
How Can I Prevent Tech Neck?
- When using a phone or other device, hold it up at eye level rather than bending down to look at it. This helps reduce the forward tilting that leads to tech neck.
- When using electronic devices, take movement breaks every 30-45 minutes to stand, stretch, and walk around.
- Strengthen your postural muscles with exercises like chin tucks, scapular squeezes, and thoracic extensions. We can show you how to perform them correctly.
- Schedule an appointment at Ace Physique! Acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and physiotherapy offer unique approaches to addressing muscle restriction and helping improve your overall movement and posture.
Don’t let screen time affect your spine. Schedule an appointment with our team today for a care plan that suits your needs.

- Lower Slowly: Lower yourself into the chair, engaging your core and leg muscles to control the descent.
- Pause Briefly: Pause for a moment in the seated position.

Seasonal Tips

From Weekend Warrior to Movement Master: No More Monday Aches!
Crushing a Saturday workout shouldn’t mean you’re limping through Monday. Muscle soreness after physical activity (also known as delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS) may be common, but you can absolutely avoid it with a few simple tips.
Five Ways to Avoid Post-Workout Soreness
1. Don’t Skip Your Warm-Up
- Spending 5-10 minutes doing dynamic stretches or light aerobic movement before your workout increases blood flow and prepares muscles for exercise.
2. Don’t Skip Your Cool-Down, Either
- After exercise, a few minutes of static stretching helps muscles return to resting length and may reduce stiffness.
3. Stay Hydrated
- Water helps move nutrients through the body and flush out waste that can build up in tissues after exercise.
4. Don’t Overdo It
- Gradually increase exercise intensity, especially when you’re trying something new. Sudden jumps in weight, speed, or duration often lead to soreness and injury.
5. Use Proper Technique
- Good form prevents unnecessary stress on muscles and joints. When in doubt, ask a movement professional for feedback. Our team is always happy to help!
