Tips for Managing Pain in the Shoulders, Wrists, and Elbows
Got a nagging pain in your elbow or wrist? Does it hurt to reach overhead? We understand the struggle! Discomfort in your upper extremities can impact nearly every aspect of daily life, from typing on your computer to bringing in your groceries. You use your shoulder, arms, and wrists constantly throughout the day, so discomfort can quickly become frustrating and limit independence.
Fortunately, the integrated team at Ace Physique can help you manage upper extremity pain through practice strategies and a blend of treatment techniques from physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture.
Reduce Pain, Restore Mobility, and Prevent Problems With These Five Tips
1. Improve Posture and Movement Habits
Poor posture often contributes to upper extremity pain. Hours spent hunched at a desk or reading on a phone or tablet can strain the muscles and joints in your neck, shoulders, and upper back. Our team can provide one-on-one education and corrective exercises that retrain movement patterns, helping you use your muscles more efficiently and avoid strain.
Try This
- Arrange your computer workstation so your wrists stay straight and your elbows rest near your body. Even more importantly, set a timer to remind yourself to get up and move around every 30-45 minutes.
2. Strengthen Supporting Muscles
Weak or imbalanced muscles around the shoulder, elbow, and wrist leave joints vulnerable to injury. Strengthening these areas can restore stability and reduce repetitive stress. We offer corrective exercises and hands-on techniques to address these muscle imbalances.
Try This
- Incorporate exercises that build shoulder blade stability and grip strength into your workouts. Simple tools like resistance bands or hand putty can be highly effective.

3. Get Creative When Managing Pain
You have more options for pain management than you might realize! At Ace Physique, we offer several ways to relieve stiffness and discomfort in your upper extremities without the use of medication:
- Massage therapy can reduce tension in tight forearm and shoulder muscles, improving circulation and easing pain.
- Joint mobilization and soft-tissue techniques can improve mobility in stiff or irritated joints.
- Acupuncture targets specific points in the body to help reduce inflammation and promote relaxation.
Try This
- Combine these pain management techniques with exercise and lifestyle changes to ensure pain relief leads to long-term improvement.
4. Restore Your Range of Motion for Better Movement
Stiffness limits joint mobility and places extra stress on surrounding tissues, which can worsen your discomfort. Our team often combines soft tissue techniques with guided exercise to restore balance between mobility and strength.
Try This
- Stretch the chest, forearms, and shoulders daily to counteract tightness from repetitive work.
5. Manage Stress and Whole-Body Health
Stress, poor sleep, and systemic health issues can delay your body’s healing response, keeping you from finding effective pain relief in your upper extremities. For many of our patients, relaxation strategies, breathing exercises, and adequate rest are often the missing piece in their treatment plan.
Try This
- Acupuncture and massage therapy can play a role in reducing stress while improving circulation and muscle recovery.

Have you ever considered that your mysterious aches and pains might stem from your job? Most jobs (even sedentary ones) require repetitive movements, like typing on a computer or using a cash register. As a result, you can develop persistent shoulder tension, wrist strain, or lower back pain.
These are minor injuries, but they can have a big impact over time. The good news? Small adjustments to your daily routine can prevent injuries and keep you feeling your best.
Try These Tips to Prevent Workplace Injuries
1. Adjust Your Workstation
- Keep your monitor at eye level to avoid slouching.
- Position your keyboard so your wrists stay straight, not bent.
- Use a chair that supports your lower back.
2. Take Frequent Micro-Breaks
- Regular movement improves circulation and reduces muscle fatigue.
- Stand, stretch, or walk for one to two minutes every 30–45 minutes.
- Rotate your wrists and shoulders to ease stiffness.
3. Strengthen and Stretch Regularly
- Strengthening helps protect joints, while stretching improves mobility.
- Perform simple exercises throughout the day, like shoulder blade squeezes and forearm stretches.
- Consistency prevents small aches from developing into persistent pain.

- Even short daily relaxation practices support overall recovery.

Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy is a unique, non-invasive treatment that uses controlled electrical stimulation to help manage pain, reduce inflammation, and facilitate healing. At Ace Physique, we often use this therapy alongside our physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and acupuncture services to provide truly comprehensive care.
What Is Electrotherapy?
Electrotherapy works by delivering mild electrical currents through pads placed on the skin. These currents can:
- Stimulate nerves to reduce pain signals sent to the brain
- Improve circulation to injured tissues
- Activate muscles to prevent weakness from inactivity
- Support faster tissue repair
Essentially, electrotherapy reduces pain and promotes healing, making it easier for you to participate in your prescribed exercise and rehabilitation programs without discomfort.
Who Can Benefit?
Electrotherapy is helpful for a wide range of conditions, including:
- Chronic pain conditions that limit mobility
- Muscle strains or sprains
- Tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons, such as tennis elbow)
- Arthritis-related pain or stiffness
- Post-surgical recovery

Seasonal Tips

Rake Without the Ache
How to Protect Your Back and Joints During Fall Yard Work
There’s a downside to everything. While autumn might bring crisp air and changing leaves, it also introduces new outdoor chores to take care of before winter hits. Raking leaves, clearing out your garden, and bagging up debris are essential this time of year, but they can also be tough on your joints. Many people find that these seasonal tasks leave them sore or injured if they aren’t careful.
Four Reasons Fall Yard Work Can Be Hard on the Body
- Raking requires repetitive twisting and pulling motions, which strain the spine and shoulders.
- Lifting heavy bags of leaves or soil can overload the lower back and hips.
- Kneeling or bending for long periods while clearing your garden stresses the knees and wrists.
- Cooler weather tightens muscles, making them more prone to injury.
Three Strategies for Protecting Your Back and Joints This Fall
1. Warm Up Before You Head Outside
Fall chores can be as physically taxing as your go-to workout, which means you need to warm up beforehand. A few minutes of dynamic stretches or brisk walking prepares muscles and joints for activity.
2. Use Proper Lifting Technique
Fall chores often require a lot of lifting, especially if you’re bagging up your leaves. Always make sure to bend at your hips and knees, not the waist, and hold objects close to your body. Try to split your leaves into smaller bags whenever possible.
3. Vary Your Movements
The repetitive movements involved in raking and sweeping can set you up for injury. Make sure to periodically switch which side you’re using to prevent one side of the body from overworking. If you’re working close to the ground, alternate between kneeling, squatting, and standing to avoid constant pressure on one joint.
Finally, make sure you take short, frequent breaks throughout your chores. As a bonus, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy autumn’s beauty!
Need Additional Help? Ace Physique Is Here For You
Taking care of fall chores doesn’t have to mean dealing with pain. With a few smart precautions—and access to our multidisciplinary team–you can keep your back and joints safe while making the most of the season.
